After an extraordinary career spanning seven decades, Iowa Trust & Savings Bank proudly honors the retirement of longtime board member and community banking leader, Gary Hughes. His final board meeting on April 21, 2026, marks not just the close of a remarkable chapter, but the enduring legacy of a man whose influence helped shape Iowa’s banking landscape for generations.
Gary’s journey in banking began in 1956 at Guthrie County State Bank, shortly after graduating from Guthrie Center Community School. Driven by a strong work ethic and a commitment to growth, he continued gaining experience at Central National Bank in Des Moines while completing his degree at Drake University. These early years laid the foundation for what would become a lifetime of leadership, service, and impact.
In 1966, Gary joined Iowa Trust & Savings Bank in Emmetsburg, a decision that would define the next sixty years of his career. Over the decades, he served in virtually every area of the bank, gaining a deep, hands-on understanding of the institution and the communities it serves. His leadership journey included roles as vice president, cashier, senior vice president, and ultimately president and CEO. Notably, Gary became the first non-family president and CEO since the bank was chartered in 1929, a testament to the trust, respect, and confidence he earned throughout his career.
Gary’s influence extended well beyond his executive role. Elected to the Board of Directors in 1982, he provided steady, strategic guidance for more than four decades. His tenure included periods of significant change and challenge within the banking industry, from navigating the hardships of the 1980s farm crisis to leading through rapid advancements in technology. Through it all, Gary remained a steady hand, ensuring Iowa Trust stayed strong, resilient, and forward-looking.
Equally impactful has been Gary’s commitment to community service. A firm believer in giving back, he dedicated countless hours to civic leadership, including thirty years on the Palo Alto County Health System Board of Trustees, several of those as Chairman. His contributions have strengthened not only financial institutions but also the health and well-being of the communities he served.
Behind Gary’s remarkable career stands a strong foundation of family. He has been supported by his wife of over sixty years, Marilyn, and is a proud father to Brenda (Mark) and Julie (Darron), and grandfather to five grandchildren. Their support has been an integral part of his journey and success.
Gary leaves a legacy of integrity, leadership, and unwavering dedication. His seventy years in banking and sixty years at Iowa Trust & Savings Bank have made a lasting impact on colleagues, customers, and communities across the state.
As he enters retirement, we extend our deepest gratitude and congratulations to Gary. His contributions will continue to inspire future generations, and his presence will be greatly missed. Iowa Trust is proud to celebrate his career and honor the lasting difference he has made in Iowa’s financial strength and community well-being.
